Antifascist Craftivists harnesses the power of artistic expression to advance progressive social change and build inclusive communities. Through artistic activism, mutual aid initiatives, and community engagement, we work to dismantle systems of oppression and create a more just, equitable, and democratic society.
We envision a future where art and activism unite to create lasting social change. In this future, every person feels safe, valued, and empowered to express themselves freely.
We believe that when artists come together, we can transform individual acts of creation into collective acts of resistance and hope. Through our creative communities, we’re building networks of support, solidarity, and strength that will help sustain us through challenging times and ultimately contribute to positive social transformation.
In early 2025, as political tensions intensified and social media spaces grew increasingly chaotic, artists across TikTok began expressing a shared sense of isolation and urgency. Their videos reflected a common struggle: creators feeling overwhelmed, unable to continue with ‘business as usual’ while watching democracy erode. The need for connection and collective action was clear in every anxious post, every call for community.
For two weeks, our founder watched and waited for someone to create this needed space. When no one did, she realized that sometimes the most powerful act of resistance is simply beginning. As a mother of five who had already been forced to relocate her family due to discriminatory legislation, she understood firsthand how political decisions can become lived reality. She also knew that not everyone can take to the streets to protest – but everyone can create.
Antifascist Craftivists was born from this understanding: that art can be resistance, that creation can be protest, and that coming together to make something beautiful is itself an act of defiance. What started as a response to artists seeking community has grown into a network of creators using their craft to support each other and work toward positive change.
noun. KRAFF-tuh-viz-uhm
A form of ART ACTIVISM that uses crafts to inspire social and political change.
Domestic arts (crafts) have been a feminized form of art throughout history. Because of its perceived femininity, it was often rendered invisible from larger conversations about art. Feminist crafters used this to their advantage to spread occulted messages.
Coined by Betsy Greer in the early 2000s, the term CRAFTIVISM recognizes craft as a powerful tool for protest, storytelling, and community engagement. Craftivism transforms the historically domestic and feminized arts into a medium for resistance, visibility, and social change.
To understand our name and mission, it’s important to recognize the lineage of radical art groups that have used provocative names and creative interventions to challenge the status quo.
In name and mission, Antifascist Craftivists follows in the tradition of these radical art groups, embracing controversy to challenge complacency. By positioning craft in direct opposition to fascism, we reclaim and redefine the power of making as an act of defiance. We invite artists, activists, and allies to join us in continuing this legacy—resisting oppression and building a better future.
